Choosing your wedding photographer is about so much more than liking their Instagram feed. You are trusting this person to document one of the biggest days of your life, so I always recommend having an actual conversation before booking. Here are some of the questions I think every couple should ask.
First, ask how many weddings they have photographed. This is a big one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with hiring a newer photographer, but if someone has only photographed two weddings, their pricing and experience should reflect that. Weddings move quickly and unpredictably, so experience can make a huge difference when something doesn't go according to plan.
Ask to see their portfolio, but look beyond the pretty photos. Do they have full wedding galleries you can look through? Are they showing an entire wedding or just their best five photographs? You want to see how they photograph everything from getting ready to the ceremony, family photos, portraits, reception details, and those little candid moments in between.
Ask where you can find their reviews, too. Reviews can tell you so much about what it is actually like to work with someone. Look for comments about communication, professionalism, how they handled the wedding day, and whether couples felt comfortable around them — not just whether they liked their photographs.
Then there are the practical questions, starting with price. Ask exactly what is included in your package, how many hours of coverage you receive, how many edited images you can expect, whether there are additional fees, and what happens if you need more coverage. You want to understand the full investment before signing anything.
I would also ask whether they use a second shooter. A second photographer can be incredibly helpful on a wedding day, especially when things are happening in different places at the same time. But it is also important to know whether a second shooter is included in your package or costs extra.
Another question I love is, “Do you recommend any other Sudbury wedding vendors?” A photographer who has been around weddings usually has a network of people they trust. If they can recommend reputable hair and makeup artists, florists, planners, DJs, venues, or other vendors, that can be a really good sign that they are established in the wedding community and genuinely want to help make your day the best it can be.
You should also ask what happens if something goes wrong. What is their backup plan if they get sick? Do they have backup cameras and equipment? How are your photographs backed up? Nobody wants to think about these things while planning a wedding, but they are important questions to ask because you are trusting your photographer with memories that cannot be recreated.
Finally, ask them about their approach. Ask, “How do you help couples who feel awkward in front of the camera?” Ask what happens if you don't know how to pose, or if you want your wedding photographs to feel more candid and natural. Ask what happens if Uncle Doug keeps getting in the way. Ask what happens if you need to re-take an important photo. Ask what they plan if it rains? Their answers will tell you a lot about whether their personality and approach actually fit what you are looking for.
At the end of the day, the right wedding photographer isn't necessarily the person with the biggest following or the most expensive package. It is the person whose work you love, whose experience makes you feel confident, and whose personality makes you feel like you can actually enjoy having them around on your wedding day.
Your photographs are going to become part of the memories you keep for the rest of your life. Take the time to find someone you trust to tell that story beautifully.
